What is the difference between my username and display names?

The username and display name are separate, and serve distinct purposes for a user’s account.

Your username will be the name that you login to this and other PRIVO iD (PRIVO-Lock™) enabled sites. Be sure you write it down and store it somewhere safe. If you are a teen or an adult, the username may be an email address if you choose. At this time, children cannot use an email address for their username. The display name can be visable publicly and is how and what others will know you by. For example, you or your child may play a game and want to be on the leaderboard. Your display name will be shown on the leaderboard, not your username.

YOU SHOULD NOT INCLUDE PERSONALLY IDENTIFIABLE INFORMATION WHEN CREATING A DISPLAY NAME.  Display names are public facing.

As a parent you can create a default display name, but we encourage children not to use a linkable display name across multiple online properties, as this can become a new form of personal information. Instead, we recommend kids to create a different display name on an online service by online service basis.

When you sign up with PRIVO, you will first create a username. Depending on the sites, apps, games and other online services you and your child(ren) engage with, you will be prompted to create a different display name for each online property if needed. Picking a good username and creating a display name with no personal information can help you protect yourself online.
