Why is parent verification necessary?

Under COPPA it is necessary to obtain “verifiable parental consent” in order to allow a child under 13 or in some cases due to other laws, even a minor (under 18) to engage in activities where they might share their personal information.

For kids registering, PRIVO requires users to provide a parent/guardian’s email address so that we can notify the parent that his/her child has registered at  PRIVO or another site / app in the PRIVO iD network. A request is then sent to the parent/guardian to consent to their child’s membership and to finish the creation of their secure and private family account. All kid accounts must have a parent linked or associated to it. Even if a parent starts the registration process, we still send a verification email to the parent to fully activate the account. To have access to certain features on PRIVO and other sites and apps in the PRIVO iD network, sometimes a higher level of parental identity verification and consent is needed.
